The Museum of Modern Art, commonly called MoMA, is a must see in New York City. Founded in 1929 by three grande dames, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, this gallery of modern and contemporary art is home to some 200,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, books, architectural models and design objects and boasts works by Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Pollock and Warhol. Why take children? The art is bright, bold and beautiful. The museum is airy and spacious. MoMA boasts an awesome family program and interactive space where children can explore and create. How to keep it fun? Kids like cool pictures but have little interest in art history. Discuss colors and shapes rather than art movements and eras of art. Pack a notepad and colored pencils and have children sketch their own masterpieces. Take advantage of the museum's family resources and programs including gallery guides, workshops, talks and tours, and teen nights. Focus on works kids find inspiring. Bail out when they get bored.
