History & Culture
While little is known about the history of the Tsonga or Shangaan people before the 19th century we know a few things about their culture. Traditional chiefdoms numbered between a hundred and few thousand people. Each chiefdom occupied its own territory and was named for its male leader. Inheritance was passed from brother to brother before moving on to the next generation. The Tsonga people were mainly fisherman, and while they raised some crops, keeping cattle was difficult due to the tsetse fly. The Tsonga fished with bows and arrows and used a fish trap called a fishing weir to entrap fish at river mouths.
