At 3 km (2 miles) long and roughly 500 meters (0.3 miles) wide, Santa Carolina Island (also known as Paradise Island) differs greatly from its southerly neighbors. And the difference extends beyond the island's small size. Santa Carolina is a true rock island. Deep channels lie just beyond the coral reef and the sand dunes and tidal flats that characterize Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque islands are absent here. Yet a day trip to the second smallest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago is no less rewarding. Great snorkeling is just a few steps from shore and the surrounding channels are nothing short of a fisherman's delight.
Getting There
Scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing trips can be arranged through the upscale lodges located in Vilanculos, Inhassoro as well as the islands of Benguerra and Bazaruto. Sail Away, located in Vilanculos, is one of the few independent operators offering transfers and excursions.
When to Travel
The weather in the Bazaruto Archipelago is characterized by a wet and dry season. The best time to visit is from June to September when the average daytime temperature is between 22-30° C (71-86° F) and the chance of rain is minimal. The weather is hot and humid throughout the rainy season (November-April); the heaviest rains are in January and February. Most resorts are closed for the entire month of February.
Things to Keep in Mind
